Prof. dr. A.P.J. der Walt, chairman of the Department of Computer Science at the Rand Afrikaans University, on August 12, 1971 after traveling abroad for attending two international conferences related to computer science. The first was the "International Symposium on the Theory of Machines and Computations" and took place in Haifa, Israel, and the second, the "IFIP Congress 71" was held in Ljuljana, Yugoslavia. At the latter conference, organized by the International Federation of Information Processing, Prof. van der Walt did a presentation on his research work on Formal Languages. It was the first time a representative of a South African university acted in one of three annual conferences. His visit was made possible through a financial contribution from the company International Business Machines (IBM). Here are Prof. van der Walt (right) with Mr. Smith of IBM during the presentation of a cheque for his travel expenses.
