Inaugural lecture--Department of Transport Economics, Rand Afrikaans University, 24 May 1976@@Man's material prosperity in this supertechnological age is to a very large extent the result of the phenomenal growth and change in transportation which commenced
with the practical application of mechanical traction only 150 years ago. Aristotle's famous dictum on potential as a prerequisite for change is utilized by the author to demonstrate the close interaction between transportation, economics and social needs.
The factor of change in any industrial society brings about ever increasing burdens
on its transportation system which, now, more than ever, calls for realism, dynamic
management and a willingness to face new challenges with responsibility.
To these ends the rapid changes in the South African field of transportation bear testimony of the Railway Management's own determination to meet the challenge of change.
