Inaugural lecture--Department of Library and Information Studies, Rand Afrikaans University, 4 June 1981@@The success of a university library service depends on the quality of the library material made available to its users. The expansion of its collection is therefore of vital importance, for unless it is systematically planned, it will become unwieldy and unbalanced. There are three activities involved in the building up of a satisfactory collection, namely, book selection, evaluation of the existing collection and the elimination of obsolete and useless material. The university library derives its functions from those of the university and the acquisition of its material must conform to the programme of tuition and research within the university, its long-term planning and the standard of research in its various departments. Success in building up a collection of library material depends on factors such as the recognition of the quality and scope of its existing collection and the needs of its users. Each university should be self-sufficient as far as the needs of its undergraduate students are concerned and for post-graduate research should concentrate on well-equipped sections of its own library. In strengthening these sections the availability of resources in other libraries must not be overlooked. The publication explosion makes it impossible for a single library to acquire all that is issued, and co-operation with other libraries is essential. Because of its responsibility towards the community it serves, it behoves RAU, through its library, to expand collections of material relating to the history of the Afrikaner on the Rand, and also education in large cities. Although lecturers have always indicated their preferences in the choice of books, the final responsibility in this matter rests with the library. The library is better equipped to assess the overall needs of its users and possesses the necessary bibliographic tools for the choice of books. The subject librarian is in an ideal position to choose books because he knows his users and is aware of their needs. He must however, work in close co-operation with the lecturers, seeking their advice when necessary, and regularly bringing new publications to their attention.
