Inaugural lecture--Department of Education, Rand Afrikaans University, 11 May 1972@@A vast amount of research has been and is still being done in various disciplines on the development of the child from birth to maturity. A number of models of development from a psychological
point of view are referred to in this lecture. An attempt is then made to build up a model of development from an educational
point of view. The following are considered to be the corner-stones for such an educational model of development: The fact (i) that education and development are determined by an image of adulthood that has to be realized; (ii) that the child is guided in its development towards adulthood by adults in an evaluating way; and (iii) that the child participates actively in its own development. On this basis a beginning is made with the building up in broad outline of a differentiated frame of reference for the guidance and evaluation of education and development in practical situations.
