Inaugural lecture--Department of Education, Rand Afrikaans University, 19 August 1980@@The upbringing of the child as it occurs in the family and school is enacted against a background of a dynamic and changing society. A continuous interaction exists between educational environment and society. On the one hand a child is educated for acceptance in society on the basis of the value, norms and skills he acquires. On the other hand certain aspects of society could promote or retard the child's upbringing and development. Factors such as effective educational facilities, career possibilities, recreational facilities, etc. could promote the ease with which the child enters adulthood. There are also debilitating factors in society which hinder the child's development to adulthood, such as conflicting norms and values, ideological differences and confused role identification. The above-mentioned factors also make the role of the educator more difficult. All educators therefore are confronted with the task of educating the child in such a way that he will be able to realize a meaningful co-existence despite a changing world.
