Inaugural lecture--Department of Transport Engineering, Rand Afrikaans University, 21 May 1985@@Training within the transport field ranges from the in-house training of vehicle operators to the university training of those managing, planning and designing transport systems. University training in transport is the focus of this address.
Transport training is provided in Transport Economics and Civil Engineering at South African universities. Investigations indicate that a shortage of trained personnel
existed in the past and that the shortage is likely to continue for the foreseeable
future. The demands on transport are likely to grow due to the relatively rapid rate of population growth and urbanization expected in South Africa in the near future. Rising social aspirations among the poorer sections of the community may also conflict with the growing official concern for the magnitude of public transport subsidies. It is suggested that transport personnel should be informed, insightful and innovative. The programme to train such people should set achievable goals, be only incrementally different from existing programmes and have a firm commitment to implementation. A proposed postgraduate transportation engineering training programme at RAU is described.
