Inaugural lecture--Department of Applied Mineralogy, Rand Afrikaans University, 29 September 1981@@The increasing importance of mineralogical research in different activities of the minerals industry necessitates a re-evaluation of the training of mineralogists. Training in the more applied fields of study such as chemical metallurgy, mineral engineering and materials science, has become essential for the more effective utilization of mineralogists in the activities of the minerals industry. These activities can range from exploration, through mining and beneficiation to extraction of metals and minerals and utilization of materials. A new grouping of related fields of study into a Faculty of Earth and Mineral Sciences is proposed. This grouping will integrate the related scientific and engineering departments to cover all mineral science activities necessary for the exploitation of minerals and fuels.
