Inaugural lecture--Department of Chemistry, Rand Afrikaans University, 29 October 1975@@After a brief historical review of heterogeneous catalysis, the contribution of the following four factors towards progress in recent decades will be discussed: 1. Improvement of experimental methods 2. Development of theoretical research 3. Research involving formulation of catalysts 4. Accumulated knowledge of catalytic, processes applied to specific problems. Some reflections on heterogeneous catalysis, as a physical chemistry research field, will be presented.
