Inaugural lecture--Department of Education, Rand Afrikaans University, 28 April 1988@@The field of study of the subject-didactition is in essence inter-disciplinary. This bipolarity does, however, not imply that subject-didactics is, academically speaking, of lesser importance than other fields of study -the contrary might even be tenable. The subject didactition has to accommodate two very explicit focal areas: On the one hand he has to focus on the formative value of a specific subject and, on the other hand, he has to present the content in the most viable didactical structure. Consequently it is necessary for the subject didactition to be in a position in terms of his academic priorities, to concentrate on the meaningful intigration of the two priorities. A few suggestions are offered to facilitate this ideal. An effort is subsequently made to illustrate the essence of what is implied when reference is made to the formative value of a subject by referring to History. Initially historical generalizations and the problem of the uniqueness of historical occurrences is highlighted. Matter of fact is that without historical generalizations the potential formative value of History is bound to decline even further. Other issues that are briefly discussed is the problem of moral judgement, master symbols and indoctrination. In the final instance the only viable option to overcome one-sided, biased teaching, lies in a multi-perspective presentation of controversial issues. In conclusion, it is maintained that teacher training as well as subject related curriculum development will both benefit by closer liaison between individuals and instances involved in curriculum planning, structured in a more formal way than is presently the case. Formal structures should be created to facilitate meaningful participation, dialogue and decision-making in this regard.
