Inaugural lecture--Department of Mathematics, Rand Afrikaans University, 24 May 1983@@Discrete and continuous mathematics are discussed separately and some remarks are made on the development of each. The influence of modern computing in this process of development is underlined. Practitioners of these two "kinds" of mathematics have quarreled often about the relative importance of their subjects. A case is argued for harmony between them, as intellectual activities, reminding one of a duet.
