Inaugural lecture--Department of Electronic Engineering, Rand Afrikaans University, 22 May 1972@@The continuously accelerating technical progress has reached the stage where Technology has become one of the most important factors in the life of man. Traditionally investigation of the structure, nature and boundaries of Technology has been conducted from outside by Philosophy and not from inside by Technology itself. The question as to what extent this is still possible and desirable at present, is posed. Technical Science is intimately related to Technology itself and consequently the structure, nature and boundaries of the former are investigated. A structure based on the elements of System, Energy, Matter and Information is proposed for Technical Science and Technology. This general structure may also be applied to Electronics, reflecting the fundamental nature of the proposed structure. In conclusion, some present boundaries of Technical Science as reflected in Electronic Materials and Information Technology, are examined.
