Inaugural lecture--Department of Information Science, Rand Afrikaans University, 7 October 1981@@The purpose of an information service is to contribute to task performance in all spheres of an organization's activities. If an organization is to stay competitive, it is essential that relevant information be made available whenever needed, and in such a form that it will make an optimum contribution to planning, decision-making, problem-solving, etc. The functions of an information centre comprise the selection and evaluation of information sources; making information accessible by means of information retrieval systems; and providing information inputs for task performance. For the centre to meet the needs of commerce and industry, these functions should be performed at the highest level of professional competence. Students from different academic disciplines, ranging from science and technology, social sciences, and commerce are needed to be trained as information workers. The training at our universities should produce professionals who will be able, for example, to handle and develop computerised information retrieval systems which will meet the particular needs of commerce and industry. Information workers should also have a profound knowledge of information sources, as well as methods and techniques of finding, processing, and presenting information in such a way that it will make a direct contribution to the successful task performance of the organization.
