Inaugural lecture--Department of Nursing Science, Rand Afrikaans University, 15 September 1975@@The increase in scientific knowledge and the accelerating social change has put unprecedented demands on the health services of every country. These changes and the expansion of comprehensive health services to the total population as social and health policy necessitates nursing and the other health professions to expand and adapt their roles accordingly. In the planning of these health service expansions it is of paramount importance that nurses and physicians co-operate so as to promote the development and optimal utilisation of both professions. The nurse has become a comprehensive practitioner and her professional education must be geared to prepare her for this role.
