Inaugural lecture--Department of Business Management, Rand Afrikaans University, 8 September 1986@@More and more is demanded from managers in South Africa. Some of the important reasons that may be given for these demands are: the particularly wide span of control in South Africa. Every manager supervises on an average 52 instead of about 10 to 15 persons; the management task is becoming more and more complex world wide because of larger firms. technological and socio-economical development, emancipation of the human work force, fierce, competition, the adverse influence of inflation, etc.; unique problems in South Africa such as the complex population composition, the revolutionary onslaught against South Africa and the oppressive draught the past number of years. A natural talent and practical experiencne is often not enough to enable a manager to perform his complex task. The solution therefore lies in proper training of managers. The Johannesburg Afrikaanse Sakekamer Chair for Business Management was instituted at the RAU on 1 January 19B6. Within a frame-work of constructive co-operation between the private sector and the University, the following aims are pursued: . to present a course work master's degree entitled M.Com. (Business Management); to undertake research in the field of management; and to promote non-formal training in management by means of e.g. short courses. The nature and circumstances of the RAU, the nature of management as a science, the nature and needs of present and potential students as well as influences on international, national and regional level naturally influence the aims. guidelines and strategies according to which the Chair functions. Especially the criticism that is expressed against post-graduate management training in South Africa and abroad. must be taken into account. Some of the strategies that are therefore followed by the Chair are: Training is done in partnership with the Johannesburg Afrikaanse Sakekamer and thereby the Johannesburg business community. The training is a team effort of the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences. Every attempt is made to use the best possible lecturers from the Faculty and from outside the University. Presentation methods include formal lectures, case studies, controlled group discussions guest speakers from businesses, the writing of a research essay and performing a smaller research assignment in each course. The training is done as far as possible in co-operation with other institutions that are involved in management training.
